Since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities. The Fresh Air Fund operates in 14 states as well as Canada. First time host families in these Friendly Towns invite children into their homes for 1 week to share the every- day pleasures of summer in the country.
The Fresh Air Fund Friendly Towns began June 3, 1877 when a young Presbyterian minister in Sherman, Pennsylvania preached a sermon on the plight of the poorest children of New York. His parishioners responded by inviting a group of children to their homes to share the fresh air and sunshine, and the program was underway.
Would you like to share a week of your summer with a child from New York City? Would you like to show a young child a life of fireflies and campfires instead of gangs and violence? Would you like to show a child a night of stars in the sky instead of neon lights and noise? Do you have a farm where a group of city kids can learn to ride horses or pick fresh produce? www.freshair.org
